On developed superfluid turbulence

چکیده
Superfluid turbulence is governed by two dimensionless parameters. One of them is the intrinsic parameter q which characterizes the relative value of the friction force acting on a vortex with respect to the non-dissipative forces. The inverse parameter q−1 plays the same role as the Reynolds number Re = UR/ν in classical hydrodynamics. It marks the transition between the ”laminar” and turbulent regimes of vortex dynamics. The developed turbulence, described by a Kolmogorov cascade, occurs when Re ≫ 1 in classical hydrodynamics. In superfluids, the developed turbulence occurs at q ≪ 1, and it is characterized by a logarithmically modified Kolmogorov cascade. Another parameter of superfluid turbulence is the superfluid Reynolds number Res = UR/κ, which contains the circulation quantum κ characterizing quantized vorticity in superfluids. The two parameters q and Res control the crossover or transition between two classes of superfluid turbulence: (i) the classical regime, where a logarithmically modified Kolmogorov cascade is effective, vortices are locally polarized, and the quantization of vorticity is not important; and (ii) the Vinen quantum turbulence where the properties are determined by the quantization of vorticity. The phase diagram of these dynamical vortex states is presented. PACS numbers: 43.37.+q, 47.32.Cc, 67.40.Vs, 67.57.Fg

Scale-separation scheme for simulating superfluid turbulence: Kelvin-wave cascade.
A Kolmogorov-type cascade of Kelvin waves-the distortion waves on vortex lines-plays a key part in the relaxation of superfluid turbulence at low temperatures. We propose an efficient numeric scheme for simulating the Kelvin-wave cascade on a single vortex line. This idea is likely to be generalizable for a full-scale simulation of different regimes of superfluid turbulence. With the new scheme...
متن کاملVorticity scattering measurements in a superfluid inertial round jet
The aim of this proceeding paper is twofold. First, we present a newly developed cryogenic testing facility where a steady high Reynolds liquid helium inertial round jet flow is generated allowing to address classical turbulence issues, such as statistical intermittency, and quantum turbulence when the facility is operating in superfluid helium. Secondly we present the first spatial Fourier vor...
متن کاملMeasurement of Turbulence in Superfluid 3 He - B
The experimental investigation of superfluid turbulence in 3 He-B is generally not possible with the techniques which have been developed for 4 He-II. We describe a new method by which a transient burst of turbulent vortex expansion can be generated in 3 He-B. It is based on the injection of a few vortex loops into rotating vortex-free flow. The time-dependent evolution of the quantized vortici...
متن کاملun 2 00 6 Energy Spectra of Developed Turbulence in Helium Superfluids
We suggest a “minimal model” for the 3D turbulent energy spectra in superfluids, based on their two-fluid description. We start from the Navier-Stokes equation for the normal fluid and from the coarse-grained hydrodynamic equation for the superfluid component (obtained from the Euler equation for the superfluid velocity after averaging over the vortex lines) and introduce a mutual friction coup...
متن کاملRenormalized HVBK dynamics for Superfluid Helium Turbulence
We review the Hall-Vinen-Bekarevich-Khalatnikov (HVBK) equations for superfluid Helium turbulence and discuss their implications for recent measurements of superfluid turbulence decay. A new Hamiltonian formulation of these equations renormalizes the vortex line velocity to incorporate finite temperature effects. These effects also renormalize the coupling constant in the mutual friction force ...
